Typology of Kyiv dovecotes Dovecotes of Kyiv are an intriguing phenomenon of urban architecture that caught my attention while working on a series of photographs about Troieshchyna (a district of Kyiv). After discovering about ten such structures, I decided to find them in other parts of the city as well. These buildings fascinated me with their peculiar architectural solutions and how they fit into the surrounding space. Dovecotes used to be popular in the past, but new ones have long ceased to appear, and you won't see them in modern districts of Kyiv anymore. They often resemble whimsical structures, resembling ash-colored houses on chicken legs. Like messengers from the past or another world, they increasingly stand empty amidst the courtyards of Kyiv. The owners of these dovecotes are often surprised when I photograph these whimsical structures and suggest paying more attention to the doves. They consider their own architectural efforts unworthy of attention, and some even claim to have all the necessary permits for these marvelous structures to exist.
